Star Trek, 2009....Thanks JJ!

For all the trekkies out there, there’s no denying how superb JJ Abrams brilliant and refreshing retelling of Gene Roddenberry’s original vision is. For all the non-trekkies, or those who snub the un-dying franchise, there can be no denial either. It is an excellent film on many levels: the action and quick-witted dialog are in a constant supply, they cast’s portrayal of our favorite archetype characters is spot-on, and the fan-tribute conjectures can’t help but make you feel like going home and watching those corny old episodes being syndicated on G4. Even better, it keeps the audience wanting more...so we need not mourn what was the seemingly slow and tragic death of one of the best sci-fi world’s ever created. From the onset of the film it is clear that Abrams was fulfilling a childhood dream by making it- and his love and tender care produced, dare I say it, one of the very best Star Trek films ever. A side effect...a new generation of trekkies? So I say to JJ, thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving Star Trek new life. And to those who are just now discovering it- go out and rent the classics and your experience with the new film will be enriched ten-fold. A final word now: of course I couldn’t write a piece on Star Trek without concluding it with some Vulcan words of wisdom...so to JJ, and all the old and new Trek fans alike, “Live long and prosper”.
